AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR PDF Print E-mail

13. WHAT DO I DO WHEN MY CHILD LIES TO ME?

Appropriate attitude towards aggressive behavior in the present may prevent future engagement in aggressive behavior. It is in our (adults) hands, whether through a complex or simple intervention to change this behavior. Although the specific details of intervention with aggressive behavior cannot be delineated in general, below are a few recommendations which generality may apply:

  1. Define clear expectations which delineate what a child should and should not do.
  2. Define clear consequences for good as well as bad behavior.
  3. Enforce the defined rules through the predefined consequences. Enforce assertively.
  4. Try and maintain a set routine.
  5. Look for alternative behaviors that may replace anger bursts.
  6. Prepare the child when he or she are about to face challenging situations.
